Working Together Out West

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Recently (ok, VERY recently, as in less tha 24 hours ago), we here at the Alliance submitted three different program proposals for the upcoming Open Repositories 2011 conference in Austin later this summer. The proposals, ranging from a consortial  panel to a seven-minute/twenty-four-slide overview of our soon-to-be-launched ADR Basic repository software platform built on Islandora and supported by DiscoveryGarden, capture much of the good that has emerged from the not-so-good ADR drama of 2010  - and yes, apparently we can have drama in repository services. Even if the sessions are not accepted, the process of preparing them has been beneficial to our activities here, it has codified our understanding of  day-to-day work we do, and helps us think about how we approach that work.

I’ll share the proposals’ working  titles here and note that we are also listed on proposals from UPEI and DuraCloud –  you can “read between the lines” if you’d like. if you want the full story, buy us the proverbial “drink” at Open Repositories…or an LTO4 tape or two, or some RAM for the VM boxes…come to think of it, a couple of cloud-based terabytes would be much appreciated, too!

OR2011 Program Proposal Titles:

Working Together Out West: Conosrtial Repository Services and Local Implementations

Fez Looks: Simple Customizations

For Members Only…

Take a look at the staging instances of member Fez implementations to see User Interface customizations.

You will need the login information for the development/staging server, as well as the various MARC org codes for the institutions, found on the wiki here: http://adrresources.coalliance.org/wiki/index.php/ADR_Codes

After logging in to the staging server at your own implementation, change the MARC org code value in the URL to view other institutions’ changes to the banner, footer, and color schemes.

Example: Change http://sword.coalliance.org/cod/staging/ to http://sword.coalliance.org/coccc/staging/ (replacing cod with coccc)

If you are interested in learning more about making a change, contact either the ADR Steering Committee representative from the inspiring institution, or the ADR directly (adr@coallaince.org)

From the ADR Wiki: Customized Namespace PIDs in Fez and Fedora

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Keith’s been working on a draft of a “gray paper” posted to the ADRWiki capturing much of his recent work- with Tim (Systems/Network Admin) as a sounding board – regarding namespace PIDs in Fez and Fedora.

To the Alliance, this means that we will be able to identify at the point of deposit or batch ingest the appropriate institution’s “bucket” of repository storage to store the Fedora object in, which will greatly aid in managing dedicated storage allocations among our members, as well as reporting out content growth trends to our members. We plan to use LC’s Organizational Codes as our namespaces, we think…

It looks like the Fez folks are interested in incorporating Keith’s efforts into their code repository, which marks our first real contribution back to the open source community! Congratulations, Keith!
